3.2.2.8.2. Installation and check of gaps in radical bearings

Selection of inserts of new radical bearings

Prevention

The description concerns only radical bearings of the standard size. Repair inserts are not subdivided into dimensional groups.

Codes of dimensional group of radical and conrod bearings

1. Radical bearings

2. Conrod bearings

New radical bearings are selected according to the identification codes applied on the crankshaft and on the block of cylinders.

On the crankshaft codes are put on a cheek of a neck of the 1st cylinder (from a chain cover). The code from five figures belongs to diameters of radical bearings, the first figure means a code for the 1st radical neck of the crankshaft, and the fifth – a code for the 5th neck.

Prevention

In some engines on a cheek of the crankshaft codes from four figures which indicate dimensional group of conrod bearings are also put (see subsection 3.2.2.10.2).

Codes of dimensional groups of boring under radical inserts

On engines codes of dimensional groups of boring under radical inserts are beaten out in the basis of the block of cylinders (are specified by an arrow).

On the block of cylinders dimensional codes are beaten out in the basis from a flywheel. On engines there is only a code from five figures, the first figure in this code belongs to the 1st radical neck of the crankshaft, and the fifth – to the 5th neck.

To pick up inserts of radical bearings it is necessary to learn dimensional group for boring under the insert which is beaten out on the block of cylinders and a code of dimensional group of the corresponding radical neck which is put on the crankshaft, and then to determine the necessary insert by the enclosed table, being guided on color marking which in the form of a point is applied on its side surface.

Check of gaps in radical bearings

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Clear an external surface of new radical inserts, the surfaces of boring under inserts in the block of cylinders and in covers of radical bearings.
2. Having pressed on an insert, lay it on the place. Make sure that the ledge (it is specified by an arrow) on an insert of the bearing came into selection in boring of the block of cylinders or in a framework of covers of radical inserts. It is forbidden to touch a working surface of inserts with fingers.
3. Keep in mind that on all top inserts of radical bearings the lubricant flute and an opening for an oil supply are provided. Lower inserts continuous.
4. Establish the lower inserts (the flute and an opening on these inserts are absent) in covers, having also combined a ledge with deepening.
5. If the gap is checked on the inserts which were in operation, then track that inserts were established on former places. The gap can be checked in two ways.
6. When determining a gap it is necessary to install by the first way covers (or a framework of covers) radical bearings together with inserts on the block of cylinders (special measuring devices – a nutromer with the arrow indicator, or a telescopic micrometer, and a usual micrometer will be necessary for measurements this way). Tighten bolts of covers (framework) with the set moment and measure the internal diameter of each collected couple of inserts. The gap in radical bearings is defined as a difference of internal diameter of assembled radical bearings and the measured diameter of radical necks of the crankshaft.
7. The second way (more exact) consists in application of a plastic calibration wire of Plastigage of round section (it is invented and is issued in the USA). The wire is flattened between the bearing and a neck of the crankshaft. After removal of a cover of the bearing the wire remains in the flattened look. Having compared width of the crushed wire with the scale attached to a set it is possible to define a gap in the bearing. The calibration wire can be got in service of car service of the dealer. If the wire at the dealer does not appear, then it can be got, having inquired at the agents specializing in delivery of spare parts for engines and having received data on existence of this product in your region. Check of a gap by means of caliber is carried out as follows.
8. Having established into place radical inserts, carefully put the crankshaft. No lubricant on necks of the crankshaft is allowed. Radical necks have to be dry and pure.
9. Prepare several pieces of a calibration plastic wire of Plastigage which length is a little less than width of radical bearings, and put on one piece on each radical neck of the crankshaft parallel to its axis.
10. Establish in the place of a cover with the lower inserts. At installation of covers be guided on the tags which are available on them to establish covers in former situation.
11. Establish a cast framework of covers of radical bearings, wrap bolts and tighten them. During an inhaling the provision of a piece of a wire should not change, the turn of the crankshaft is not allowed.
12. On all engines turn off bolts of fastening of covers. Turn off bolts in the return sequence on one turn for reception. Turn out and get bolts from get them from the block of cylinders.
13. Uncover radical bearings (or a framework of covers), watching again that situation flattened calibration a provolok did not exchange and the crankshaft was not turned.
14. Compare width crushed a provolok with a scale on packing and define a gap in the radical bearing. Compare to a standard gap.
15. Measurement of a gap by comparison of width of the crushed calibration wire with a scale on packing
16. If the gap differs from standard, then the wrong selection of inserts can be the cause (or their increased wear if the inserts which were in operation were checked). Before coming to a conclusion about need of replacement of inserts be convinced that between covers or the block of cylinders and an insert at measurement there were no dirt or oil. If width of the flattened wire from one edge is more, then it indicates conicity of a neck.
17. If the gap differs from norm at measurements with old inserts, then repeat measurements with new inserts. If and with new inserts the gap exceeds norm, then it is necessary to address for consultation in service of car service of the dealer, or the specialist in this engine to get advice how to work further. It is possible also that it is necessary to pereshlifovat necks of the crankshaft and to replace inserts repair.
18. If necessary get inserts of the corresponding dimensional group and repeat the procedure of measurement of a gap in radical bearings.
19. Upon termination of scratch out a nail or a wooden chip the remains of a calibration wire from radical necks of the crankshaft, without having damaged at the same time a surface.

Final installation of the crankshaft

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Carefully get a bent shaft from the block of cylinders.
2. Establish inserts of radical bearings on places, being guided by subitems 5 and 6. If new inserts are established, then carefully wash out them in kerosene, having removed the preservative remains. Wipe with the fabric which is not leaving pile dry inserts and rods. Plentifully oil fresh for the engine of a surface of the inserts installed in the block of cylinders.
3. Grease with a thin layer of jellied lubricant persistent half rings and attach them on both parties of the 3rd radical bearing. Pay attention to that lubricant flutes on both half rings were turned from the block of cylinders aside.
4. Install the crankshaft in the block of cylinders and check an axial side play (see subsection 3.2.2.8.1).
5. Carefully clear the demountable planes of covers of radical bearings and the block of cylinders of lubricant.
6. Oil fresh for the engine of a surface of the lower inserts. Make sure that adjusting ledges on inserts come into deepenings in covers.
7. Establish inserts of radical bearings on former places, being guided on tags.
8. Establish a cast framework of covers of radical bearings, wrap bolts and tighten them so far only by hand.
9. Tighten bolts of covers in the sequence specified in the drawing with the set moment of the 1st stage.
10. A dynamometer key with a face head tighten bolts of covers with the set moment of the 1st stage.
11. Tighten bolts on the corner corresponding to the 2nd stage of an inhaling, observing the specified sequence. If there is no key with an angular scale, then tighten bolts a dynamometer key with the moment specified for the 2nd stage of an inhaling.
12. Check freedom of rotation of the crankshaft then establish other details (see subitem 13-16).
13. Check purity of demountable surfaces of the holder of a back epiploon and the block of cylinders. Put the tag specifying depth of landing of an epiploon in the holder then get an epiploon from the holder, having hooked it the big screw-driver with a flat edge.
14. Establish a new epiploon in the holder, having convinced that sponges of working edges are turned towards the engine. Press an epiploon easy blows of the hammer, on depth which corresponds to the tag put before removal of the fulfilled epiploon.
15. Check available the directing pins, then apply a sealant strip on a demountable surface of the holder of an epiploon. Dress the holder of an epiploon on the crankshaft and install on the block of cylinders. Tighten fastening bolts with the set moment.
16. Establish a flywheel, chains of the drive of cam-shafts and the oil pallet.
